Writing this last blog post is hard, much harder than I ever though it would be. It is like writing the end of a book. How do you want it to end? It is the first post people will be seeing for a long time and I feel like I owe you all something more than just saying goodbye. I am still not sure how to define my end either, which also makes this hard. Though I am unsure it is really the ultimate end for this blog right now that is how I am treating. I may be back later in the summer, I may be back in six months, I may be back in two years or I may just pop in randomly every now and again, but for right now this is it. This is the end. So, here goes...
Last week I saw Kristin Chenoweth in concert and as soon as she started singing "For Good" I knew that is how I needed to close this door in my life:
Last week I saw Kristin Chenoweth in concert and as soon as she started singing "For Good" I knew that is how I needed to close this door in my life:
"I've heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them.
And we help them in return.
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true,
but I know I'm who I am today because I knew you..."
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them.
And we help them in return.
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true,
but I know I'm who I am today because I knew you..."
This blog and my readers have really changed me and taught me so much! I am able to say with complete confidence that you each came into my life for a reason. I know many of you likely do not feel the same, but after lots of time, thought and prayer, I know this to be a fact. I have grown and matured over the past four and a half years (just take a look through my photos and see my hairstyles....) due in part to this journey of which you have been an important part. You all have taught me so much about life and myself (yes, even you mean commentors). When I was laying in bed last night shedding a few tears (even though I know this is the best decision for me right now it is still hard) I started to think about all the people this blog has introduced me to and how much I have learned from each of you. I thought about how nervous I was before I met my first reader in real life...Blair taught me that meeting people on the internet was not all that strange after all. I thought about how I celebrated along side Tricia and Dee when they shared their miraculous news with me....they taught me that you sometimes have to wait for the good things in life. I thought about Muffy...she taught me that you can talk to someone almost daily for four years and when you meet them in person it they are still even better than you imagined. I thought about Susan and Kerry...they taught me that you really can make your dream business a reality. I thought about Bethany, KK and Marianne....they reiterated that you do not have to have a significant other to define who you are. I thought about Sydney, Royar and Carly...in their young age they taught me to enjoy life a little more because high school, college and soon, my 20's, will be over in the blink of an eye. I thought about Nina, Kristen and Erin...they taught me how wonderful motherhood will be someday. I thought about Alice, Wendy and Linda (two readers without blogs)...they taught me that good taste never goes out of style, no matter your age. I thought about Melissa, Melissa, Katie and Emily....they taught me that you can meet your best friends in the most unexpected places. I thought about all of you...you each have collectively taught me so much about life and myself and I thank you for that.
When I started this blog on March 31st, 2008 I never dreamed I would one day be able to say that something that seemed so petty at the time would one day come to mean SO much to me. I have been so blessed on this journey and I thank God at the end of every day for all He has given me. I have met women I would never have had the chance to meet otherwise. I have been on the front page of papers and even on national TV. I have been introduced to brands that are now some of my very favorites. I have been invited to events that I would never in a million years scored invites to otherwise. And I have met some of my very best friends.
Many of you have emailed me over the years asking me how these things just seem to fall into my lap. While I may not be the best about replying to emails I do read them all and try to address them in some form. It still sometimes blows my mind what so many people ask me for blogging advice. I still really am flying by the seat of my pants to be honest. However, in ending I thought I would share what I have learned with you all on this journey in hopes that you too might be able to apply it to your blog or life. So, here is my advice to all of you:
*Be true to yourself in every situation. Blog about what YOU like and what YOU want to write about. It is YOUR blog and your life after all. It is obvious to me when bloggers write just to write because their heart is not in a post. I quickly go on to the next blog when this is the case. So, find your niche (not the niche you think you should be in) and roll with it.
*Be selective. Remember that you do NOT have to write about every company that emails you.
*Relating to the above tidbit, unless I feel strongly about something, I always wait for people to reach out to me. Unless blogging is your full time job there seems to be no need to constantly be contacting companies. They are the ones getting the free exposure anyway so let them be the one to reach out to you. I promise it will make your blog seem so much more rewarding when you get those emails.
*Do not worry about the numbers/sponsors/giveaways. If that is what you yearn for just keep up your hard work and everything else will eventually follow. Also, be advised that having and hosting events with companies is way more work and much more time consuming than any blogger makes it out to be.
*Be realistic with your expectations. Let's face it, there is already a Julia and Julia and Pioneer Woman.
*Get to know other bloggers they just might become your new best friends! Also, do not take Twitter for granted. It is a great resource is getting to know others.
*Do not feel like you have to spend a lot of money to create a "successful" blog. I have made all my headers and graphics myself. I found it was much easier to achieve the exact look I wanted after doing some Googling. They might not be as perfect as if I paid $150, but they are me and they are mine.
*Do not let the haters get to you. As Taylor Swift said: "people throw rocks at things that shine."
*Blogging is not all about creating a brand. If you start off that way you will lose track of what really matters. I for one can tell you that today, even though all the perks have been marvelous, it is the relationships I have made that matter the most.
*Live your life first, then blog. Do not live your life for your blog.
*Follow your heart and your dreams will become a reality!

"It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime.
So let me say before we part
So much of me is made of what I learned from you.
You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart.
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine by being my friend...
Because I knew you I have been changed for good."
I think it is safe to say that blogging has changed my life and for the better. However, all good things must come to an end eventually. When a a door closes it simply means that another can then open. I have no idea what might be in store for me in the months and years to come, but I know I will always look back on this time in my life and smile. Thank you all for an AMAZING four and a half years! You have brightened my dark days with your comments, tweets and emails. You have taught me about myself and who I am. You have inspired me with your ideas. You have helped me be a better person. You have each changed me for good!

It has truly been a pleasure to get to know you through your blog. You're a wonderful woman wise beyond your years. Take time to enjoy life and live it to the fullest. xoxo
This made me cry. But I am happy knowing that we will eventually meet one day. Sending you lots of love and joy for the next chapter of your fabulous life!
Cheers, sweet friend!

My reader will truly miss you! Just don't leave Twitter or deactivate Facebook. ;-)
I just started tearing up, I do hope you come back to us one day. I'm feel so terrible for being a silent reader, but you've been really inspirational to me. It's what lead me to start not one but two blogs. So if you don't come back, I would just like you to know that you've touched many people as they have you. XX Mrs WASP
I definitely teared up a little when you brought up "For Good"! You're the person who inspired me to start blogging... I even used you in a marketing project once! You're so great at what you do and I really hope that you join us again one day!
A very classy end to a very classy blog.
So sorry to see you take a break or whatever it will end up being. I don't know how I found your blog, but I have been reading it for a couple of years. I was so surprised when I saw a photo of Andrea G.C. on your blog several years ago. I copied it and sent it to her mother. :-) We are Alpha Phis from TTU. I have so enjoyed reading you blog and wish you nothing, but the very best!!

If I don't have the honor of meeting you on this earth I'll look for you in heaven! Journey well, sweet Helen. You have been an example to us all of how a true young lady should live. It has been a privilege to peek into your life each day. Take care!
I, for one, am so glad that you are retiring. I have a lovely daughter ( she even wrote a 'fan email' to you once - with no reply), and I can honestly say I hope she grows up to be more accepting of others and not so greedy or materialistic as you. The Elizabeth McKay contest and your begging for votes was the final straw! My goodness! How insatiable are you? Yes, you have changed over the past four years, but for the better? Perhaps, it is due to you current environment, but maybe time off from blogging will give you time to access how you come across to others. Oh, well. In one ear and out the other.
Thanks, Hopsy. I haven't commented often--or maybe ever--but I've read you on a regular basis. Godspeed--and come back sometime!
Here is a big hug for you! I pray that the next door is just fabulous. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and being true to yourself. You and your relationship with your family, friends, and the Lord will fulfill you during your blogging withdrawal (which is inevitable!). I look forward to corresponding through Twitter! Blessings to you!
I am saddened that you are ending a great thing however you are a well written/ spoken young woman. I have enjoyed my short time with you. May God bless you in so many new ways.

Ignore Julie! Obviously a woman with too much time on her hands who is just looking for attention. Probably bitter she isn't as successful as you are. I have appreciated your blog for the short time I've read it! Delta within the Sigma!
Will miss your posts!!! :) Best of luck!!!!

Hopsy, thank you for sharing your life, crafts, celebrations, and joyful spirit with us. I've always thought of you as the little sister I never had, prodding me to try different things, make different crafts, live life to the fullest. So, thank you.
I look forward to staying in touch via Twitter and FB.
As for the few detractors, keep in mind what Bette Davis said, "Birds peck at the best fruit."
I'll miss reading your blog, but I've been enriched by getting to know you for the past few years as one of your readers.
Wishing you joy and blessings.

Dearest Hopsy, you are truly a gem! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts throughout the years. Things just won't be the same without you around in blogland. No words can express how much you will be missed. My wish for you is much love, joy, happiness, and lots of luck, too. Most of all, my wish is that all your dreams really do come true; and while these dreams gracefully fall into place, I hope that you will make memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you Hopsy for everything you have given blogland...especially, for spreading the love of pink and green! Best of luck and goodbye Hopsy, we will all miss you! –xo, Cynthia

Hopsy,
I have so enjoyed reading your blog over the years. Your posts have been so entertaining, creative, thoughful and genuine. I will miss your lovely post and hope if you do feel a calling back to blogging you will return. I wish you the best and please know your classy blog will be missed. Take care!
If I had a glass of champagne now, I'd raise it up to you, dear H! So wonderful to have gotten to know you both through your blog and also in person in Charlotte and Dallas. The future holds good things for you, and I will look out for an occasional update!
Such lovely words. And so true about sharing those memories and lessons you have learned. Thank you for staying true to yourself.
You will be truly missed!!
I will miss your blog so much! Hopefully you come back someday!
Oh, Hopsy...
I really will miss your blog! You, PIPM, Grits, and Mojito Maven were the first blogs I started reading back 4 years ago when I was still a "lurker." ha:)
When I read this post, it made me think of that song by Semisonic.
You know the line, "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end..."
Cheers to you and all your future endeavors:))))
XOXO,

This last post was beautifully written and so genuinely heartfelt. I will miss reading about your wonderful life! Thank you for the glimpse you have given into what makes you you! I think you are fabulous.
Hopsy, you will be missed. Have a well deserved time off, and I hope you will be back.
I will miss you. Thank you for sharing yourself as honestly as you did. I think you are a lovely person and enjoyed knowing you.
Just such a full circle moment for me Hopsy and I am truly touched. It's hard to believe the pretty girl with the killer hair I spied on the Martha Stewart show three years ago is now a friend and confidant. And, being mentioned in your farewell post means the world. You're future is blindingly bright girlfriend and I am psyched to have a front row seat for all the pink and green fireworks. Cheers to the blogging Class of 2012! XXOO
Thanks for sharing your life with us! Looking forward to keeping up with you on FB and twitter! :-) Have a great summer!
On to your next venture, enjoy! I've been a blogger/follower since the beginning back in 2008. If anything I hope you find true love, settle down and eventually start family. :)
Thank you Hopsy for sharing a special part of your life with me. Your blogspot will be missed.
Wishing you many happy days of love, laughter and success!

so sad to see you go. reading your blog inspired me to finally create one of my own! I hope your break gives you the time to enjoy yourself and do everything you want to do!
Say it ain't so......
I'm impressed that you follow your instincts and make big changes when it feels like the right thing to do. I've enjoyed your blog, and you have been incredibly generous to feature/tweet/FB about me. Best wishes to you!!
Sad to see you go, but so happy I found your blog. I saw you on the Martha Stewart show a few years back and found 2 new favorites - Lily Pulitzer and your blog. I've enjoyed all your posts, but especially the "home to MN" posts, as I am a MN girl and U of M alum myself. Hope to hear from you in the future!
I have really enjoyed reading your blog, it was one of the first I ever followed. I wish you the best of luck in your personal life and you will be truly missed in the blogger world!
Oh Hopsy, I am going to miss you so much. You were always such a bright spot, please let us know what you are up to occasionally!
Hopsy, yours was one of the first blogs I had ever read and because of your wonderful ability to share in such a pleasant and colorful way I knew it was something I also wanted to try. Three years later I am still doing it but I understand your desires wanting to pursue other endeavors that will fill the blogging void. You're young and beautiful and trying new things in life is exactly what you should be doing! I am in complete support but will miss you too. :) I still wish I could get you together with my grad school son! LOL!
The best of luck to you. God bless, honey. xoxo
This post is such an elegant way to end a blog. I definitely teared up a bit! I have been impressed by your blogging consistency and dedication and also your thoroughness. I hope you will pop in here and there to let us know how you are. I am sorry that I have been such a quiet reader, but thank you for being so open with all of us!
PS. I am excited to hear that your parents are moving to the Middle East! I will definitely be following your mother's blog.
All the best to you Hopsy!
Wishing you all the best! Happy that we'll still be able to talk via Twitter! xo
Hopsy, This was hard to read as you are one of my absolute favorite bloggers and the gracious, smart, talented young woman that inspired me to start my blog.
It was beautifully written and said just perfectly. I will miss you dearly but am thankful to be able to keep up with you on Twitter/Facebook!
God has wonderful plans for you; I just know it!
Thank you for teaching me and all of the other young (and older) women out there how to be a true lady with classic style, taste and poise.
You will be missed! XOXO
Such a great blog!!! I love it!
Would you like to follow each others blog via GFC and Bloglovin in order to keep in touch?

So sad to see this end but you need to keep doing what you have always done and that is, being true to yourself. You are right, All good things must come to an end sometime. I will miss your posts very much. I felt I gained a friend in you. I loved your photos and all the fun things you would find for us to read about. I look forward to seeing what your next chapter has for you if you ever decide to pop back in and let us know. ;)
Good luck with everything. I am so sad to see you go!
I am sad you are bringing your blogging to a close - I remember when aeons ago you started with 'Hopsy'. It is a shame we lost touch when I stopped blogging, I feel bad I never wrote an explanation like you have. Are you staying on Twitter?
Kappa Prep--I loved following your blog over these years. You always let us into your fun life and interests. I do hope for you that you meet and fall in-love with a wonderful man that will occupy every moment of your time, so blogging will not be possible. You deserve it!
Come back, Hopsy!
I will miss checking your blog everyday, I wish you the best!!
For some odd reason I am just now seeing this post?! Thank you for the shout out, my darling, I love you! All good things must come to an end, but at least I know I'll be seeing you in real life each time I come back to Dallas! xoxo
