Budget Teeth Whitening

A few weeks ago I read about an at home whitening trick on Pinterest. All you needed was a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a q-tip. I did a little bit of research online before trying this to ensure it was safe for my teeth and gums and felt confident it was not going to ruin my teeth after navigating pages of information. In fact, I even found out that hydrogen peroxide is one of the main ingredients in whitening strips and you will not die if you ingest a little. Now, with that being said, before you try this you might also want to research for yourself (I will not take any responsibility if things go wrong!), especially if you have sensitive gums, are pregnant or have other health concerns. Also, I think this would only be best for adults and if you are under 18 you should consult your dentist and doctor before trying it.
Anyhow, I feel compelled to write about this as I tried it for the first time last Sunday and the next morning my teeth were quite noticeably whiter. I tweeted about the "trick" last week and got lots of replies so here goes...
PS- be warned there are some close-up photos :)

What you need:
Hydrogen Peroxide (be sure it has not expired)
Q-tips
Toothbrush (optional)
*I added a step to my routine and finish off with a toothbrush.

I do my whitening PRIOR to brushing my teeth per online recommendations.
First, dip the q-tip in hydrogen peroxide and rub it across your teeth. I dip mine in once for my top teeth and then again before I do my bottom teeth. If there is a tooth I want to focus on I will come back after rubbing the q-tip over all my teeth and give that one for extra loving. If you have used whitening strips you will notice that the hydrogen peroxide tastes the same.

Let the hydrogen peroxide sit on your teeth for 30 to 60 seconds (I opt for the 60 seconds). It will start to foam which is fine. Now, you can either rinse your mouth here and be done or you can do what I do and add a step.
I pour hydrogen peroxide over my tooth brush (this sanitizes it too) and then brush my teeth with it for about 45-60 seconds. I then rinse my mouth out before brushing my teeth with toothpaste. As mentioned my teeth have become noticeably whiter in just one week (six days really as I skipped a day)! Who knew that for under $2 you could whiten your own teeth?!

What a great tutorial. Those strips are so expensive so this is a great tip.

Hopsy, my boyfriends mother taught me a trick similiar to this. I rinse my entire mouth with it twice a day. I was worried at first, but if you look on the bottle it is used as an oral rinse. It does work but I am going to try your trick to see if mine get even whiter! thanks for the advice.

My high school biology teacher said he washes his mouth out with peroxide every day. I thought he was crazy but he actually taught us that it was good for your teeth and mouth! I'm glad this worked so well for you! I might take the jump and try it myself!

I had a friend who used to swish a little less than a capful once a week for teeth whitening.

Definitely giving this one a try. So much cheaper than whitening a faster and less messy than strips!

I do this too but I'm lazy and just swish it around after I brush my teeth. It has worked wonders!

Thanks for this tip. And it is great to read everyone else`s comments. I was wondering if it would effect the enamel on my teeth, but now that I read in the comments that the bottle says it is used as an oral rinse, I will try it. Will do a little extra research, but thanks so much for this post. I keep looking at the whitening toothpastes, but the last one I tried did nothing. I had my teeth whitened years ago, but it made my teeth feel so sensitive it hurt to brush them the first 2 weeks and felt uncomfortable eating so I have always been hesitant to do it again. Thanks again.

Hopsy - I asked my dental hygienist (I actually use to be one myself) .. about this and she said, yes .. and if you also dip the q-tip soaked with the hydrogen peroxide into a little baking soda, you get even better results!

Since you do your whitening prior to brushing your teeth, doesn't that rinse off the teeth-whitening chemicals supposed to stay in your teeth? Or does your DIY kit works otherwise? I'm intrigued how that works because mine is done by a dentists hendersonville tn professional but I'm looking to doing it myself in the future.

You can also use this with baking soda (do the same thing with the qtip) and your teeth will be even whiter!
Thanks for sharing, a lot of people will get some good use out of this :-)

Wow. I really want to try this I have already been putting baking soda on my tooth brush with tooth paste ( I can't stand the taste). I am currently trying to quit smoking but I am a heavy coffee drinker so my teeth don't look their best. I am glad I scrolled down to see what everyone else wrote. Thanks for the post.
