I cannot believe I am just now getting around to writing this post... Anyhow, a few months back I went to a screening of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I had extremely high hopes for this movie as it was not only a British flick (there were several Downton Abbey cast members in the film!), but took place in India.
As I have mentioned before, India is an extremely unique and eye opening country to visit. It is filled with so much culture and beauty, but it is also an extremely difficult place to live/visit. A drive that would take 75 minutes anywhere else in the world takes 4+ hours in India and many basic necessities are nonexistent. Not to many the clash between classes is rather disheartening and overwhelming. I think many that have been there would agree that the way India comes across in most TV shows and movies is not really how it is so I was unsure what to expect with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Well, it really blew me away to be honest. It was so dead on that I felt like I was there. From the airport to the bus ride to the people to the hotel to the head bobbing (those of you that have been there know what I am talking about ;) )....everything was just as it actually is in India.
The cast of TBEMH was also simply phenomenal. They worked so well together and created a sort of chemistry between viewer and the film. You really feel for each character and learn to love (and maybe even dislike) them all.
I laughed and almost cried and left the theater feeling so happy. This was a feel good movie with a number of wonderful lessons. I would go as far to say that this is one of the best movies I have seen all year and a MUST see for those of all ages (even if you are not an anglophile)!

So happy to know about this film. And the little inside tidbit about India, a place I've never visited.

That movie looks so cute! I will definitely be on the look out for when it is in theaters in my city!
I am DYING to see it, the minute I saw the previews, I knew this was a "me" movie, I am a big fan of many Bollywood movies including The Namesake (see it if you haven't, loved it) and Slumdog Millionaire.....seriously foreign movies rule!! I cannot wait to see this, thanks for the wonderful review, I am always drawn to movies featuring India, the colors, sights and culture are so fascinating!
Glad it's good; it's on my list for sure. Thanks!
Oh my goodness! This film looks so wonderful! And has left me longing to travel to India. I'll be in England in the next week & a half, I hope it's still showing their so I can see it.
Thanks so much for telling us about this movie! It looks so special, I can't wait to see it!!
looks great!
I thought it looked good in the trailers - will look forward to renting it on DVD...
I visited Kerala for three weeks last year to meet my future in-laws. I agree that India is a radically different place than America. I learned a lot about myself in those three weeks, and got to travel to places that another American woman has never seen. It was a humbling journey. I am excited to see this movie!
I cannot wait to see it, too!
Can.Not.Wait!!!! I am fascinated with India, ever since reading The Far Pavilions many years ago (also A Passage to India, The Raj quartet and everything Jhumpa Lahiri has written)and so envious of your many trips there. Did you see Oprah's recent two-part series in India? I thought she made a very honest portrayal of the paradox of India. Her interview with several Indian women was a fascinating insight into their culture.
I can't wait to see this movie!
I'll have to watch it!
Yay, so glad to hear the movie is good! The previews during Downton Abbey looked great, but you never know.
