Just Be YOU!

I have been thinking about writing this post for some time, but feared being too negative. However, after speaking with several good friends (both IRL and blogger) I have found that many others are on the same page so here goes nothing. Before proceeding, please note that is it NOT directed at any one person in particular. These are simply my general observations from my time as a blogger.

It is always funny to me when I get emails from people asking how to make their blogs "popular". In the grand scheme of things I have never ever considered myself popular. Yes, I HAVE always had a GREAT group of friends, but I was never Homecoming Queen or captain of any team. Perhaps living in smaller towns and going to smalls schools where I was just friends with everyone and a definite "in" crowd did not exist made me not even care about being popular. However, even in a HUGE metroplex I do not feel the need to try and become more popular as I remain happy and confident in my choices and life. When I started blogging almost four years ago I never intended to be popular on the internet either. Now, I have been incredibly blessed to have met SO many AMAZING people on this four year journey, but again I am no Pioneer Woman. I am simply a very happy almost 27 year old living MY life. The key word in that statement is MY. I never write posts with hopes of gaining some sort of popularity or sponsorship. I simply write about MY finds, MY day to day life and MY loves. As I have stated before, at the end of everyday this is MY blog and it is simply an added perk that so many of you enjoy supporting me and teaching me on my journey.

With all that being said it seems as if the more and more blogs I come across seem to be steering farther and farther away from themselves. I have no problem at all with people branding themselves. In fact I am sure some of you could consider my having a blog, Facebook page and Twitter account a form of branding, but in my defense I am not actively checking who unfollows me or searching keywords that bring people to my blog (I will admit I look at Google Analytics three to four times a year for a good laugh on the funny key words that connect people to me). It all just seems silly to me when people try SO hard and frankly seems like way more effort than it is worth. Your blog is an extension of YOU and who YOU ARE! If you are writing about things simply to get more readers is your heart really in a post? Twenty years from now, for goodness sake, even five years from now I do not want to look back and realize I neglected to post or tweet about something because it did not fit your intended "audience" or I was afraid to offend people and would lose followers. No matter what you write you are never going to be able to make everyone that comes across your blog happy anyway and there is ALWAYS going to be someone that will judge you. Also there is the question of time. While I sincerely love sharing my life with you all I have other things that I value too. I just cannot fathom spending hours upon hours a day writing posts, updating my multiple pages, contacting companies to host giveaways (I personally just allow them to reach out to me) and whipping up some new sort of pie or unheard of project. If I was to do this I feel like I would essentially be neglecting other things that matter to me. Now, I highly envy those of you that are able to juggle so many tasks (you must not require as much sleep as me ;) ), but that is just not for me right now. It is important to find a happy balance and that can be different for everyone.

Anyway, all in all what I am trying to say is that your blog is YOUR blog. It is about YOU! There is no sense in trying to create some facade just to gain popularity. In all honestly, people will see through your facade and this might even back fire.

Just be you!

Blogging is NOT a competition nor is all about the numbers. You may get one comment one day and ten the next, but having five readers is MORE than have zero! Whether you make one friend through blogging, or twenty, you will still have more friends than you had before you started! Let people fall in love with who you are and let yourself grow on your journey. The ways of this world can be rough, but if you conform to them it will only get harder. Stick to your guns and you will find success in everything you do!

I will end this in the words of Michael Buble: "Keep on loving what is TRUE and the world will come to YOU!"

Great post! I needed it today. Not because of blogging (I'm actually thankful for the few followers I do have), but they are good words to read when thinking about popularity and friends.

Great post! I think people sometime get lost on having the "it" blog but as long as it inspires you (the writer) then that is all that matters.

Hopsy, absolutely love you for this post- possibly your finest to-date. The blogs that I love and cherish (yes, cherish) are those that the author's soul shines and sparkles through the pages and yours is absolutely one of them. This was a nice chin-up too, thank you for that.

This is so true! Sometimes I forget this, but that's when I take a day off of blogging to recollect. I do it for fun, and to meet amazing women like you!

Thank you for writing this! I have not been a blog "author" for very long - so I did not feel like I could say anything but I have been thinking it.

I started reading blogs in 2006 to get a glimpse of what everyday life looks like for other people. So many of those blogs have turned into almost 100% advertisements, and frankly, I have stopped reading.

I happen to enjoy people's posts about what they did over the weekend or funny or random thoughts about life, love, family, or friends.

Thank you again!

Fantastic post, Hopsy. I know this will strike a chord with so many of your readers! I often joke about "real" bloggers needing less sleep than me! And I am the world's s-l-o-w-e-s-t blogger. There is no way I could keep up with a post everyday or multiple times a day like some! But that's ME! I still love blogging and try to stick to being me :)

Amen, sister! People follow and unfollow for a million reasons. But across the board I only read blogs that make me feel personally connected to the author. Not fake or put on just for an audience. But like the author and I could be friends after reading her blog for so many years.

I agree Twitter can be part of branding but I actually have felt more of a connection to bloggers via Twitter. The relationship becomes more of a converstaion than just a few stories each week.

Thank you for this... I am new to the blog world and almost felt like 'being yourself' had been outlawed in blog land. This was a great reminder of why I started my blog in the first place!

Thank you again!

Amen sister...I couldn’t agree more! Blogging is such a fun journey about following the loves of your life...whether they are Monograms & Manicures or Rodeos & Chicken Wings! xx

Great post. I don't post as much as I would like but I like how you post about things you like- that is what makes your blog nice. Thanks for all you do.

You hit it right on Hopsy! Thanks for taking the jump and posting this, I feel as a somewhat new blogger many need to hear this. Thanks for speaking your mind and continuing to be YOU! :)

I completely agree. I have been a silent blog stalker for the past two years and have only recently ventured into the actual blogging side; sometimes I just want to exclaim "get over yourself."
You said everything I feel, but much more eloquently than I could attempt!

Great post! I think a lot of bloggers also fall into the trap of doing nothing but blogging about products which attracts a lot of readers...but few friends.

hopsy - this is truly a wonderful post. ive been blogging for years but recently have felt like all the joy has been taken out of blogging because it seems so much like a competition now.

thank you for taking the time to remind all of us that in the end, we should only be blogging for us - including the things we love and care about and want to share with our readers, no matter if there's 10 or 100 or 1000 of them!

Great post. I stopped reading a lot of bloggers that seem to be in it just to get the followers and sponsors. I want to feel a connection to the writer rather feeling like I am just another follower helping them earn money.

I loved this post! It also pertains to real life.. Not just blogging. There are so many people who don't live their lives just to fit in. They aim for the status quo vs being original. I like to think.. If Einstein or George Washington were not original.. Where would this world be now? When we try to be things that we are not.. We grieve ourselves of who we could be.

Brava!

As with anything in life, one must be authentic. People overlook that truth in whatever they write or do resonates with their audience--whether it's a few people or hundreds.

awesome post and advice :) You're right, a blog should be an extension of who you are...

I love this post! I have had to look at my blog over the years from time to time and figure out if it is on track for me. I do sponsored post from time to time but only if I feel it would be something that might interest my friends and only after being contacted by a company. This isn't a "business" so I am not out seeking it. I do like getting paid but I don't blog for that reason. A few months back I decided to try to be more transparent in my posts, even if I lose readership...because that is who I am! Good for you for sharing your thoughts!

Oh, and btw, the last time I looked at Google Analytics to see what was bringing people to my blog one of the keywords/phrases was "Slither Somedays Florence SC"....now how would I draw THAT person????

Wonderful post! I am most grateful for the friendships I have made as a result of blogging and try to write from the heart about things that I like or things that matter to me. Sometimes I feel like I might be boring to people by posting pictures of my ordinary life, but it's who I am and I want my blog (in some ways) to be an archive of what I did with my daughters throughout the years. Well DONE!

Well said, pretty lady! Just another testimonial that YOU are fabulous! XO

I don't blog, but I think blogging, like keeping a journal or creating art, has to be essentially for YOU.

Great post! Love your honesty! You can definitely tell when people blog to tell their "story" versus to try to make money, etc. The real, honest blogs are the best in my opinion :)

Hopsy, I totally agree with you. I have followed your blog for some time now and recently was inspired to start my own (http://laurapinkintheafternoon.blogspot.com/)
For me, blogs are places to express our interests and meet friends with similar interests!

Very well said! When I first started my blog about four months ago, the first question that lots of people asked me was "how are you going to make money out of it?", and frankly, it's not about that...it's about finding a purpose; that bit of sparkle that pushed you to blog, whether you share personal details or outfits (which is my case). Being true to yourself requires being vulnerable and honest and humble. When I first saw your Tweet about this, I didn't understand where you were coming from and was afraid to ask...I'm happy you clarified it.

Dear One!!

What drew me to your blog years ago was one of your comments on a Chinese adoption blog I read. I am a mom because of the miracle of adoption...to an amazing daughter born in China. She wasn't born in Texas but we got her here as soon as we could!

What kept me coming back is that you are so grounded in who you are in Christ. You are you because of Him and you live it publicly. Your parents must be so proud of you. I am and I don't even know you personally!

I am a JLD sustainer and was delighted when you were sponsored. What an amazing impact you have had in our community here in Dallas and abroad. You let His light shine.

Keep shining!

Love,
Mommy Firecracker

I really loved reading this post today. I've lately been stressing over the look and feel of my blog and I even emailed you a while back about how to make the header at the top, because I was so worried people wouldn't like the way mine looks. I just happened to talk to one of my best friends last night and I told her I was going to do a complete overhaul of my blog and that I needed a new name and she practically reached through the computer herself to stop me. She said that she absolutely loved the blog the way it was and that if I changed it, it would probably make it worse rather than make it better and that the name is the best part (It is the incorrect usage of a french phrase, I only found this out mooonnnths after I had registered the domain name) and it was so encouraging to hear that she loved it the way it was. It was even more encouraging to read your post today, literally 24 hours after I had this conversation with her. I think i've been so focused on becoming this, like, "known blogger" like some of the blogs I follow so avidly that I'm losing the point of doing it. It is supposed to be for me, and if others like it, well then that's a bonus. So thank you so much for writing this post, it really helped remind me why i'm blogging in the first place!!

I have been feeling very old as an over 40 blogger in a world of youngsters! This really encouraged me to keep plugging along. I wouldn't trade the new friends for anything!
