I grew up singing hymns and each summer at Greystone we also had a "Hymn of the Year." We sung this hymn every Sunday and during several morning assemblies so by the end of the summer you had it memorized. I am so thankful to have learned and become familiar with so many hymns this way and also through the help of my parents and grandparents. Recently, it seems as if many bands have been recording some of the "old" classics and I have just LOVED hearing all these on the radio. There are so many new mixes to these classics, but the words remain the same. When listening to my favorite hymn today (Come Thou Fount) I asked everyone on Twitter what there favorite hymn was. Many of us share the same favorites; Blessed Assurance, Jesus Christ is Risen Today and Be Thou My Vision to name a few more. The words to these hymns are often so simple, but the meaning so very clear. My very favorite verse of Come Thou Fount is the final verse. It is SO powerful to me- we are all prone to wonder, but we must stay focused on Him.
Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of thy redeeming love.
Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
Hymns are a wonderful thing to memorize. I love to sing them to myself and they come in handy when in times of need. So you memorize hymns? What is your favorite hymn?

I have SO many favorite hymns! Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Here I am Lord, and Precious Lord, Take My Hand are the hymns I always come back to again and again.
Jesus Christ is Risen Today is my all time favorites (I was happy to see it is one of yours too!!)--I requested it be played at our wedding--my Pastor said that was a first--but when I told him how much I loved it and how special it was to me--he agreed it was a must play!!! For my dad's funeral we played Be not Afraid--I love that one too!!!!!
I grew up in a church that sung hymns and I miss them so much!! I think we need to revert back to hymns because the words are so great. I am so glad to hear that people are recording them now!
"The Lamb" was my favorite in primary school. I got to sing it in front of everyone one day at chapel.
Thank you. I needed to read this post and hear that hymn this morning so very much.
Surely the Presence is my favorite!
I love so many of the old hymns! When I was in college, there was a small prayer circle that met at the chapel and we always sang a hymn or two from the old hymnals. Some of my favorites are Be Thou My Vision, Praise Ye the Lord the Almighty, Jesus Lover of My Soul, Holy Holy Holy, and Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee.
Thank You so much for posting this. It was definitely exactly what I needed on this Monday Morning. I love this hymn. I'm with all the other comments about "Amazing Grace"--the story the verses tell--incredible.
Nothing can move you like a good Hymn, they are so simple and poignant. At the private school I attended growing up our choir director had the foresight to have us memorize a Hymn each week. I still vividly remember the week, in sixth grade, we memorized “Blessed Assurance” (we made up hand motions too!!). I really enjoy “It is Well” and “Holy, Holy, Holy” as well. Thanks for making my day!
I honestly don't know if I can pick a favorite hymn; there are so many great ones :)
I used to have a really wonderful devotional book that featured a hymn for every day and a devotional and a little bio on the writer of the hymn. Some of the hymn writers had such amazing lives; it was so inspiring to read their stories!
My church at home always has the congregation sing this hymn. I love it!
My favorite is Just a Closer Walk With Thee -- I memorized it and played it on the piano in church when I was about 12 years old....and it was played the day my daughter was baptized! It will always be special to me and it reminds me that Jesus is always right beside me ready to hold my hand! What a great thing to know!
Other goodies are:
What a Fried We Have in Jesus
How Great Thou Art
and Amazing Grace
I love it when the church sings them a capella!
I love Crown Him With Many Crowns, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, St. Patricks Breastplate. I love hymns!!
I love this post! My favorite is He Abides. My mom used to sing this to me when I was little and she rocked me to sleep!
What a wonderful post! This and Crown Him with many crowns are probably my two favorites, with Holy, Holy, Holy a close 2nd.
You absolutely HAVE to look up the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's version of Come thou Fount...it makes me cry it's so beautiful! I'm not Mormon, but this choir is amazing

"On Eagle's Wings" and "Here I am Lord". Sometimes they make me cry they are so beautiful :)
You have inspired me to memorize more hymns. They really can be a great source of encouragement. The Battle Hymn of the Republic is my all time fave.
I love hymns and loved being in the choir in school. My favorites are On Eagle Wings, Gather Us In, and Be Not Afraid.
We sang hymns every morning in high school, and I love Easter hymns! "I am the bread of life" and "Jesus Christ is risen today" make me want to run to church (which , if I'm honest, I don't normally feel).
Oh, I'm so glad to read over everyone's lists of favorites! Some of mine are "Great is Thy Faithfulness", "How Great Thou Art" and "Blessed Assurance", along with the others mentioned. I'm glad I'm not the only girl who still loves the old hymns... Thank you for your beautiful post!!
just too great that song. I taught myself how to play it on the piano last year. I only know a few songs but this was a keeper! LOVE Let There be Peace on Earth also. I love a good hymn. Methodists are known for their hymn singing :-)
I adore this hymn!
