Airshow!

Now that is has FINALLY cooled off a bit in Dallas it the perfect time to really enjoy being outside. So, yesterday I headed to the Alliance Air Show with friends. I have never been able to attend until this year and since we had passes to a seating area with food and drink it seemed like the perfect way to spend the afternoon!
We loved watching all the planes do their tricks.
Big Albert taking off- he is flown by the Marines.
The Blue Angels- I cannot believe how close they are- amazing! Judging by this photo I am not sure I wore my earplugs correctly, but at least they worked!I was so fun to get to walk right by all the different planes on site.
Up close and personal- these are HUGE!
This seemed so Top Gun with people sitting on top of the plane.
A US Army plane for my dad!

Birthdays!

Tonight I had the best time celebrating a dear friend's (and fellow blogger's) birthday. Not only was it just any birthday, but it was Emily's GOLDEN birthday! We started off the evening with lots of treats and manicures with Emily. Afterwards, we headed across the street to a Dallas staple: Taco Diner. Taco Diner just so happens to one of my very favorite salads ever...
Everyone, with the exception of Cassie, ordered the delicious Los Cabos salad. If you are ever near a TD you simply MUST try it. It is nothing short of delicious!
The fun continued with lots of presents!!
Then it was time for singing and cake- so fun!
Yum!
A wonderful night was had by all, but most importantly we had the best time celebrating a dear friend on her special day!

Pink and Green Dream

It is no secret that I swoon for all things pink and green and that elephants are one of my favorite animals. So, you can imagine my delight when I spotted these darling prints in The Pink Pagodas etsy shop!
These darling images are only $15 each and I think they would be perfect in a kitchen, over a desk or in a powder room. They would certainly provide that needed pop of color!
Be sure to check out all her other darling creations too- I am a HUGE fan of the ginger jars. Oh, and to make things even better I just found out The Pink Pagoda is based in Dallas!!

WASP Wednesday: Halloween!

Happy Halloween from Muffy and I!
WASPs love a good reason for a party and to dress up, even when dressing up is in a costume. WASPs sometimes go back to their roots when dressing up on All Hallows Eve, but they always keep it light heartened and fun. Some fun WASPy costumes for 2010 include:
Squash Player- this is especially easy since it does not even require one to change after their morning game!
Queen of England- WASPs cherish history and love a classic icon.
Gin and Tonic- this is especially good for the WASP couple. Wear white shirts and iron on the words "Gin" and "Tonic." The ultra creative WASP might even iron on logos!

"Jack-o-lantern smiling bright
Witches flying in the night
Ghosts and goblins, cats and bats
Witches with their funny hats
A full moon can't be beat
As we go out to Trick or Treat
Happy Halloween!!"

Cheering For the Other Team!

I posted this story earlier this year, but now that football season is in full swing I thought it would serve as a perfect reminder to us all. You never know when you might turn some one's day around or put a smile on some one's face. So, as hard as it often is we should always go the extra mile!

There Are Some Games In Which Cheering For the Other Side Feels Better Than Winning

Rick Reilly
High school football is big in America, but I suppose there is no place where it is bigger than in Texas. Friday nights there are legend.
The fans scream; the stands are packed; cheerleaders with pom-poms jump and sway to the beat of the school band and everybody joins in the chants and stomps their feet on the metal stands until you are sure they will collapse.
This is the frenzy of Texas high school football.
But there is one football team in Texas that is a little different. When they play on Friday night, their stands are empty, no band, no cheerleaders, no mass of parents or townsfolk wearing the school colors and waving banners and flags. They take the field without anyone cheering them on. When they score a touchdown, which rarely happens, there is no wild celebration behind them… All of it seems hollow and muffled in contrast to the tidal wave of roars and drums and chants that come from the opposing side.
They are the Tornadoes of the Gainesville State School, a fenced, maximum-security facility. The young men who go to Gainesville State are there because they have made some major mistakes in their lives. But the players who are on the team are there because they have worked hard and have earned enough good behavior points that gives them the privilege to leave the facility and play football on Friday nights—always an away game for them—always a home game for their opponents—and almost always a loss. They don’t have a weight program or training equipment or high-paid coaches and assistants. They don’t have a large pool of players to draw from. The school has 275 boys, but many are too old or too young or can’t or don’t meet the “criteria” to play. And they don’t have the support of a town and a mass of parents and family and reporters and bands and cheerleaders.
That is, until November 7th. Something changed. They played Grapevine Faith Christian School.
A few days before the game, the Gainesville coach, Mark Williams received a call from Faith Christian coach, Kris Hogan, asking him if it would be okay if Faith formed a “spirit” line for his team when they ran on the field. Mark said, “Sure, that would be a real encouragement to the kids.” He thought that the line would consist of a couple of the JV cheerleaders, but when they took the field, there were a hundred people in it and it stretched to the 40-yard line, filled with Faith Christian parents, fans and varsity cheerleaders, complete with a banner at the end for them to burst through that read “Go Tornadoes!”. And then, those parents and fans sat in the stands behind the Gainesville players and when the Tornadoes broke the huddle and went up to the line they could hear people cheering for them, by name. When they got a first down, “their” fans erupted.
You see, coach Hogan had sent an email out to the Faith Christian parents and students asking them to consider doing something kind for these young men, many who didn’t know what it meant to have a mom and dad who cared, many who felt the world was against them, not for them. Hogan asked that they simply send a message that these boys were “just as valuable as any other person on earth.”
So half of the Faith Christian fans were now sitting on the visitor’s side of the field, cheering for the Gainesville team, and in some cases, against their own sons.
–Cheering for a team decked out in mismatched old uniforms and helmets.
–Cheering for boys who wouldn’t go home that night and have a smiling dad slap him on the back and feel his mom put her arms around him and say “I’m so proud of you son!”
–Cheering for the underdog.
This was a Friday night like no other for the Tornadoes. In the locker room, the players were confused.
“Why are they cheerin’ for us, coach?”
“Because, men, they want to encourage you. They want you to know that they care about you…that you have value.”

Coach Williams said the boys were stunned. For many of these kids, it may have been the first time that anyone had shown them, so visibly, unconditional love.
They were down 33 to nothing at the half. Williams encouraged his team to set a goal for the second half: to score a touchdown against this vastly superior team. And when the boys from the State School took the field again, with their fans cheering them on, everything started to click. And they did score. Not once but twice.
And the fans went wild.
Coach Williams was asked what the bus ride was like on the way home and he laughed and said that they were all asleep—their bellies were full. That’s because after the game, the parents brought a whole bunch of food over to the guys: hamburgers, fries, candy, sodas…and included in the meal sack was a Bible and a personal letter of encouragement from a Faith Christian player. But then, he said, they formed a line for us out to the bus. And the parents patted them on the back and said, “Nice game” and “Look forward to seeing you guys next time.”
As they left the field that night, Coach Williams grabbed Coach Hogan and said to him: “You’ll never know what your people did for these kids tonight. You’ll never, ever know.”

Boo!

I have always had a HUGE sweet tooth. I always pick sweet treats over anything savory. So, naturally I have always loved Halloween because of all the candy everywhere! As you know I also love to bake so this year I decided to put my loves to good use and make treat bags for friends.
I got busy making red velvet and pumpkin cake balls.
*Please note that I did remove all the extra chocolate from around the cake balls before packaging them.
I also tried something new...candy corn bark. It was delicious and SO easy- I think it only took me about 20 minutes to make each batch.
I could not forget puppy chow; another easy and delicious recipe that is always a hit.
Last, but certainly not least, I bagged my beloved candy corn. It added a pop of color to the mix don't you think?
Now that all my October baking is said and done I am thinking about Christmas...

Tis the Season

I will soon be all dressed up with nowhere to go... I have a love for party dresses and could not resist adding several to my collection this Fall.
I LOVE the Sondra dress and just happened to snag the only one the Dallas Lilly store had. You can never have too many black dresses and this number gives the little black dress an entirely new, flirty look. I love the ruffles and the one should and cannot wait to put this to good use soon. It will be tres, tres chic paired with gold duds I think.

I bought the black Kaya dress last year and just love the fit. The tailored waist and full skirt are so fun and elegant so I could not resist adding another to my collection. My Kayas are actually quite a bit shorter (if you saw my tweets with photos you know!) than that shown above which I have to admit I actually really like. I also love the shimmery twill fabric and plan to pair this dress with black Manolos and a matching black wrap for a winter soiree.

So many party dresses and not enough parties. It might be time to host an elegant dinner party just to put these to good use!!

Chixie

After taking the summer off Chixie is back and better than ever! Cassie and I have been busy working on new products for our big show in Dallas this weekend. Here is a sneak pick for you all (items will be posted on etsy later this week).
We love ribbon and we love to dress up casual outfits. We have loads of new reversible ribbon belts and we are excited to announce that after many requests we now have children's sizes too!
Aprons, aprons, aprons galore! We have 37 NEW aprons for this week's show!
We have lots of color and lots of flair for the cook and hostess within!
On a VERY hot day Cassie and I were SO ready to head home and drink sweet lime, but mother insisted we stop at one more fabric store. She then convinced us we needed to buy all the above fabric for aprons and we are beyond happy that she was persistent. These turned out BEAUTIFULLY! They are dainty, yet elegant and tres, tres chic to.

In addition to everything pictured we have loads of hand embroidered linens, pashminas in every color under the sun, elephant wall hangings, fun sunglasses, jewels and of course lots and lots of pearls!

WASP Wednesday: Recipe

Happy WASP Wednesday from Muffy and I!
This week Muffy and I are talking food. WASPs love to socialize and this of course involves food in both solid and liquid forms. While dinners at the club or a favorite local establishment are hard to beat there are some occasions where the WASP enjoys turning on their Viking and putting Mimi's silver to good use. With late nights at the end of the week and all day squash commitments Saturday brunches happen to be a time the WASP tends to stay home (Sunday brunch is reserved for the club).
As we know the mother WASP tends to lean towards easier recipes (and mayo...when not making brunch treats of course) so what better a time to make an all in one dish?! Casseroles and stratas are a go-to brunch food. Kitchen staples (eggs, milk, bread and cheese) are easy to locate is the grocery store (the WASP does not always have a well stocked fridge...that is left up to the bar) and only one bowl is needed for some mixing. The easier, the better! The best thing about a brunch casserole or strata is that it can be prepared on Friday evening before the weekly cocktail party and then pulled out and popped in the Viking pre-brunch on Saturday. Voila! Ready, set, cook! Oh, and remember the muffins, mimosas and Bloody Mary's too!
Two Cheese Strata
What you need:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more, softened, for baking dish
8 slices white bread
1 1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups grated Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
4 large eggs
2 cups milk
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon coarse salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Directions:
*Butter an 8-inch square baking dish (I actually used a larger pan and just added an extra egg and more milk which worked perfectly); line bottom with 4 slices bread. Sprinkle with half of each cheese. Top with chives. Layer with remaining bread and cheese.
*Whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Pour mixture into baking dish. Cover; refrigerate at least 6 hours (or overnight).
*Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake strata until puffed and golden, about an hour. Let stand 10 minutes before serving (I lightly sprinkle additional cayenne pepper on top before serving to add a little more flavor).

True Prep Takes Dallas

I have been looking forward to this evening's True Prep event for well over a month. As I am sure you guessed I am all about fun events and when combined with all thins prep they are even better! Tonight's book singing featured both Lisa Birnbach and Chip Kidd and then an extra special addition: MONOGRAMING of your Sperrys! I had to teach an English as a Second Language class at church so I was worried I might miss all the fun but thankfully the party was still going strong over an hour in. I walked in with Cassie and we were greeted by Tickled Pink and Green (who is now back at her old blogspot address) and two other blogging dears. One of the things I have gotten better about since I started blogging is being more outgoing. I do love to talk, but can be somewhat shy. However meeting so many new people has really helped me become much more outgoing- another tidbit to add to my running list! Anyway, we had the BEST time chatting with everyone, but the real treat was meeting the authors behind our fun and ever-so-preppy reads.
Tickled Pink and Green and I with Chip Kidd and Lisa Birnbach.
Lisa loved the bags Cassie and I had made in India and is interested in a Hopsy- oh la la! I also thought it was funny that she and Chip kept saying I remind them of one of the girls in Animal House. My, oh, my, I need to watch this this weekend I think... Needless to say, we had the best time meeting and greeting these dynamic duo! What a treat!
After the signing it was time to pick out a new pair of Sperrys. Naturally, I was drawn to the most shiny pair available.
Trying on my new, soon-to-be-monogram metalic Sperrys!
The next step was to pick a font for the monogram, then the chosen monogram location (this was the hardest part for me) and of course the color. The amazing artist was kind enough to mix a special pink paint for Cassie and I. I think he was slightly amused that I kept asking him to add more and more red to the white. I was ready to go all out and wanted statement pink of course!
The finished product! Sheer perfection in my opinion.
Typically, they only do one shoe, but I ended up having HFG painted on both...the more the merrier!
What a wonderful evening filled with divine company. If you have the opportunity to attend either a True Prep book signing or a Sperry monogram event you simply MUST! Cheers to all and green sproting that pink and green with pride- I know my feet will be!!

Monkey Business

As I was going through my camera tonight I came across all these photos I had taken in India and forgotten I had. Well, they just happened to be of one of my favorite aspects of India- the animals!
Animals roam freely in India. You see wild dogs, cows, goats, donkeys and elephants walking the streets on a daily basis. The other animals that is everywhere is monkeys! I know I have written about monkeys before, but it is safe to say I adore them (in real life, on clothes and in home decor too!). While we had monkeys in our neighborhood the very best place to see monkeys is up at the Presidential palace (pictured up top). Naturally, Cassie had to experience seeing all the monkeys on the lawn so we had our driver take us one afternoon. Much to our dismay all the monkeys were inside the gates so there was nothing to see (or photograph). However, our fabulous driver knew just where to go and on the way home we found a friend sitting on top of a car.
As soon as we spotted him he must have decided it was dinner time so he ran across the street and found a watermelon.
Isn't he cute? As cute as he was we were careful to keep a good deal of distance (thank goodness for zoom!!).
Apparently, monkeys love more than just bananas...
This was one hungry monkey!
Yum, yum, yum!

video

I was SO excited that I even figured out how to use the video feature on my camera (I know, I know, I am WAY behind) and captured this grand moment! Cassie and I are easily amused as you can see!

Happy Bosses Day!

As I have mentioned before I simply adore my job and feel so blessed each and every day. I never dreamed I would find such a perfect fit right out of college and I can honestly say I never want to leave! Well, today was Bosses Day so naturally a gift was in order. I think books always make wonderful gifts. If the recipient already has the book they can re-gift it (this also means you have good taste and know their likes!) and you can always find a place for a book in your home or office. I ordered Flair by Joe Nye a few months ago and fell in love (an Isis by Deborah Sears plate adorns the cover- need I say more?). Every page is filled with delightful tablescapes and ideas for entertaining (see examples below). You can flip through over and over and never get bored which it makes the perfect gift for any occasion!

Happy Bosses Day to you and yours!

Fall Food Staple

I received a copy of Martha's Everyday Food: Great Food Fast for my birthday last year and after flipping through I marked the recipe for the Spicy Chicken Enchiladas with Pumpkin Sauce. As you already know, I am a die hard pumpkin fan and love anything everything and anything that involves this Fall staple. I am by no means a professional cook so I like very basic recipes that result in gourmet food and this recipe does just that! It took about 25 minutes to prep everything (this included shredding a roasted chicken and making the sauce) and another 25 to bake the dish. Then, voila, it was done and ready to eat! ENJOY!
1/2 Roasted Chicken (mine came from Tom Thumb and was pre-roasted)
6 scallions, thinly sliced
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree
4 cloves garlic, peeled (I cheated and used minced garlic and a bit less than the recipe called for)
1 jalapeno chile, quartered (remove ribs and seeds for less heat, if desired)
1 teaspoon chili powder
8 corn tortillas (6-inch)
1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) grated sharp white cheddar cheese (I LOVE cheese so I went ahead and just used 8 ounces)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine chicken and scallions. Season generously with salt and pepper; set aside. In a blender, puree pumpkin, garlic, jalapeno, chili powder, 2 1/2 cups water, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until smooth (hold top firmly as blender will be quite full). Pour 1 cup of sauce in the bottom of an 8-inch square (or other shallow 2-quart) baking dish. Lay tortillas on work surface; mound chicken mixture on half of each tortilla, dividing evenly. Roll up tortillas; place, seam side down, in baking dish.
Pour remaining sauce on top; sprinkle with cheese. Place dish on a baking sheet; bake until cheese is golden and sauce is bubbling, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes before serving.
I served rice with yellow corn as a side and of course we also loaded on the sour cream and guacamole. Everything was delicious and easy which made this the perfect Fall evening meal!
