From the Archives of Carolyne Roehm

Sweetheart Burger For years, I celebrated Valentine’s Day with a flamboyant display of my culinary skills, attempting to impress my beau of the moment. Inevitably, I got carried away. After one such dinner which ended in exhaustion and not eating until nearly midnight, my tactful date told me he would rather have a cheeseburger and more of my company to go with it.
And I thought, you want it, you’ve got it, baby.
This Valentine’s Day, free yourself from the stress of cooking an over-the-top gourmet feast. No more chewy chicken and sunken soufflés as you attempt to change the CD, stoke the fire, or ooh and ahh over his token of love. Instead of performing culinary gymnastics, charm your Valentine by creating a simple meal made unforgettable with whimsical hearts.

Here I used cookie cutters to turn out heart-shaped crudités, cheeseburgers, cottage fries, and brownies—a simple dusting of powdered sugar makes them look as sweet as they taste.

What a FABULOUS idea from the one and only Carolyne Roehm! The possibilities for cookie cutters are endless. The above ideas could carry over to any theme party or birthday and they will certainly make you look like the hostess with the mostest any day of the year!!!

I did this dinner for my family two years ago and it was a hit. I was even able to have the heart shaped lollipops wrapped with a red satin ribbon, courtesy of Target's dollar section. The heart-shaped potatoes were a little more labor-intensive than I cared for so I ended up omitting the heart shape and just used the potatoes slices as they were. Overall, it was a great success. Thanks for the reminder. I might have to do it again.

I absolutely LOVE this idea! It's particularly wonderful for the "meat and potato" men who wouldn't enjoy a gourmet feast anyway! Thanks for posting!

Oh I love it! And a cheeseburger would be right up Mr. PG&S' alley! When we were first dating (a hundred years ago!) I bought a hear shaped muffin tin from WS. Maybe I should haul it out (if I can find it!) and make him some heart shaped muffins for breakfast too!

Oh, that's a completely cute idea :) Guys tend to not care WHAT we cook as long as there are carbs involved!

Target has the heart-shaped lollipops again this year in their dollar section. Saw them this afternoon.

This is the most adorable idea. I love the idea of making the Valentine dinner special by adding very simple, but sentimental touches without killing yourself in the process. A heart shaped cookie cutter goes a long way. Fabulous!

Ha ha so true. One year I made dinner in order to pinch a few pennies. Around 10pm we were finally eating meatballs and homemade sauce.

How adorable! I want to do something sweet and special for our first Valentine's Day as a married couple, and a heart shaped burger may be just the thing to show my husband I love him. He'll love it.. its a burger! ;o)
