It is sure to be wonderful! I will be traveling with three Lilly loving friends and hope to meet up with several of my dear corporate friends I have made over the past year. Then, I have also blocked off the evening of November 18th, 2009 for YOU BLOGGING friends! It is a must that we meet and I would LOVE to plan a party, evening chit chat session or dinner. All My Bags Are Packed
I am SO thrilled to be able to attend the Lilly Pulitzer Jubilee Fall Sale in November!! I never thought I would be able to go again so soon, however all has be worked out. It will be a quick trip (think there and back in 26 hours), but I am very good at packing EVERYTHING I want to accomplish in to a VERY small time frame so I am not at all fretting. It is sure to be wonderful! I will be traveling with three Lilly loving friends and hope to meet up with several of my dear corporate friends I have made over the past year. Oh goodness, I am filled with such excitement. Queen of Cakes
What a dream it would be to see one of these works of art or taste one of these delicious baked treats!
Or even better yet have her make your wedding cake (I hope father is saving up because mother set me up for this dream 15+ years ago)!
There is nothing the queen of cakes cannot do. Sylvia Weinstock's cakes have been flown around the world and they have decorated tables at celebrity birthdays and inaugural balls. There seems to be no end to what she can create!
If you love sugar as much as I do (tish, tish is right, but it is far too good to give up) then you need to invest in Sylvia Weinstock's Sensational Cakes. Not only is it jam packed with page after page of these edible works of art, but Ms. Weinstock even shares a few recipes! Yum!
Now, this is actually a coffee table book that goes with your morning brew! It is simply delicious is every single way!
WASP Wednesday: WASP Movie
Out of Africa is such a classic and a favorite of many around the world. WASPs love history! The British colonial times are quite fascinating to anyone, but especially the WASP. The era is so romantic and rich in history. Now, the WASP knows times were not perfect, but the exotic places the Europeans cousins got to live during the early 1900's were quite fantastic and seemed like paradise!
Out of Africa is based on the book written by Isak Dinesen, which was Karen Blixen's (the main character in the movie) pen name. Karen moved to Kenyain 1913 to marry her cousin. The plan was to farm cattle, however her husband choose coffee instead.
They lived on a beautiful plantation together until their marriage ended with separation in 1921 and then a divorce in 1925. Karen brought many of her possessions with her so like a good WASP or Sloane Ranger she was able to throw a dinner party with the best china and crystal on a different continent! Karen also reached out to all those that worked on the plantation. She helped the sick and started a school for the worker's children. She certainly made a mark as her home is not only a museum now, but there is also a Nairobi suburb named Karen!
I do not want to spoil the movie or book for those that are longing to see or read either, but this is a MUST see. Karen in a fascinating woman with impeccable taste and style (and WASPy style- even when working with the coffee and on safari she dressed the part!). The movie's scenery is beyond beautiful and the love story is so captivating (but do be warned you may need Kleenex!). This WASP flick takes you back in to another era and leaves you yearning to travel to Africa!
If you have a topic you would like to see covered WASP Wednesday do email me. We have many we are still looking to cover, but are of course willing to change the order around for you dear reader!

I'm Dream of Pink and Green Holidays!
I know it is not even October, but you can never start shopping for pink and green Christmas items too early. They go FAST! All the ornaments were 40% off last week so of course I grabbed a few.
I loved this flamingo and the alligator. I stood strong and only left with one- I choose the alligator with a bow. The green will look fantastic on my new pink tree!
I have a pink feather tree, but not a tinsel tree. Since this was also 40% I had to make it mine. I am going to hang all pink and green ornaments on this tree and make it extra preppy! I will be sure to take a photograph in December.
Isn't the pink star tree topper divine at $11.99? I might just have to go back in a few weeks...
Oh, how I adore ribbon! I love that there are so many fun options this year. I picked up a few that were on sale during my visit. I cannot wait to pair them with the Lilly holiday paper!
Look at all these pink and green ways to spice up your wreaths and gifts. Love it!
I think this 'Boo to You' would have been my sign of choice. Well, actually, if I had a yard I would probably just have bought both and put one on each side. How cute would that be?!
I thought all this hand painted pink and green pottery would be darling for a birthday tea or luncheon.
Pink and green flowers that last all year! These would surely brighten up even the gloomiest of spaces.
I loved all the pink wire items. They would be fun centerpieces at an event or just whimsical decorative pieces for your home. The price was certainly right!Preppy Blog Award: Preppy 101
This week Her Southern Charm and I are SO thrilled to give you all the 411 on the beloved Preppy 101. Not only do you get to read her wonderful interview, but she is sharing a photo as well! This is BIG news, at least for me since I could not recall ever seeing a photo of Preppy 101 and her family. She looks just as darling as ever and is even wearing a shift she and I both happen to own. She also treasures her gold charm just as much as I do. Those of you thinking about starting a bracelet need to join the club- they are fabulous, make gift giving easy and you can have them FOREVER!! Such a small world, isn't it!? Enjoy getting to know the divine Preppy 101 a bit better this morning!
I decided to start blogging when I retired in 2008. I was sitting here with my son who happened to be home when I created it. Blogging seemed like so much fun. I knew I wanted it to represent what I love, so it was just natural to call it “All Things Southern & Preppy”. I attribute my lifestyle and my beliefs to my Southern heritage and my Preppy style, so it is fitting I believe! My blogger name came from my son. I couldn’t for the life of me think of something clever, cute, and memorable, so I asked AS what I should call myself. He didn’t even hesitate: “Preppy 101”! Perfect. I do love this name.
2. What preppy item could you not live without aka the one thing you would take with you to a deserted preppy island?
My most precious preppy possession is my gold charm bracelet. My dad started it for me when I was 17 or 18 years old {not sure which}. He traveled all over the world for his work and would bring me a charm from every destination. These charms are really irreplaceable. Many of them are 18k with moving parts. Additionally, I have charms that my mom gave me, as well as others from my late husband and my children. I love my bracelet and it is an item that people associate with me because I wear it all the time. You can always “hear” me coming cause it jingles so loudly! J
3. Who is your preppy icon?
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis – How did I choose her above all others? . . . because I have never seen a picture of her wearing an outfit that I would not wear myself. I also have icons from movie characters: Ali MacGraw in Love Story, Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief, Lois Chiles in The Way We Were and The Great Gatsby just to name a few!
4. Where do you find your daily blog inspiration?
My inspiration is random. Sometimes I am motivated by whimsy – a fun outfit, a movie, Southern college football {really not whimsical you know; we live and die Southern college football ;-)}, a new place to shop, an old movie, a new movie, a new product, a funny experience. And sometimes it is more serious. It’s really whatever is on my mind when I sit down at my computer!
5. What is your favorite preppy photo of yourself?
I wouldn’t say this is my favorite, but it is definitely one of my favorites. Hope my daughter and daughter-in-law don’t mind ;-)
PD is in J. Crew, I am wearing Vintage Lilly, BDiL is in J. Crew. I do love this picture cause that trip was the Most Fun.
6. If you could have one celeb's wardrobe including shoes and bags, whose would you get?
This is a difficult one! I would probably take every single thing in Cindy McCain’s closet and jewelry box! I think her taste is impeccable; she is always so appropriately dressed for every occasion, unlike some women in politics who are hit or miss. I know she isn’t a celebrity in the normal sense of the word, but this works for me. I also love the fashions that Betty Draper wears on “Mad Men”, one of my all-time fave shows. And the fashions on “American Dreams” were fabulous - a show that was sadly cancelled.
7. What clubs, societies, or volunteer organizations are you involved in? Were you in a sorority in college?
This will be a shocker, but I was not in a sorority in college. I am so the sorority “type” hehe J My PD & fiancé and AS & BDiL are all members of Greek organizations. Over the years I have been involved in Student Government, service organizations, PTA, sorority mother’s club, fraternity mother’s club, and Professional organizations. Since retirement I have become more interested in politics and recently helped host a fund-raiser for one of our Republican Senators. I am a member of a small group Bible Study. I volunteer in my community in several capacities that I won’t mention for privacy issues. I also support some organizations in the areas of historic preservation.
8. What were your plans for the weekend?
Oddly, this weekend finds me doing nothing spectacular. I am usually going to the Tennessee game, enjoying family being home for the games, preparing lots of food for tailgating, and just overall being really busy! But today I am not going to the UT game, so I am enjoying a relaxing day of watching college football on TV. I will go to church tomorrow, come home and enjoy whatever comes my way! The upcoming weekend will find me at the UT vs. Auburn game with PD and her fiancé. I’m sure we’ll have a lovely lunch on Sunday after a fun {I hope} day at the game. Go Vols!!
9. Describe your perfect preppy outfit. Don't forget to include accessories.
Now, you know I have many that I consider perfect, but I will narrow it to one. This is one of my favorite outfits to wear: Pendleton Black Watch plaid wool skirt; white medium-starched, button-down collar Brooks Brothers or Polo oxford cloth shirt; yellow wool ribbon sweater; tights; Oxblood Bass Weejun {w/tassels} loafers or Brooks Bros. navy blue w/tassel flats; gold charm bracelet+gold bangle; Coach watch; strand of pearls; pearl stud earrings; navy blue, monogrammed Bermuda bag; Ralph Lauren Safari perfume. I always feel great when I wear that outfit.
10. What designer do you think embodies classic American prep and why?
Most of the time Ralph Lauren qualifies. Every now and then he has a moment and gets a little askew, but most of the time you can find those preppy staples in his line. I love his ads with the vintage items and the Chris Craft boats. Brooks Brothers and Lilly Pulitzer stand out as companies that I can count on to always have classic, traditional fashions like I love. And, of course, {one of my favorite places to shop} J. Crew and Vineyard Vines! They, too, always have something I love. I also can’t omit Pendleton, L.L. Bean, and Orvis.

Hello Dolly!
The ingredients are all very basic and easy to find. To be honest I never ever measure when I make Hello Dolly bars, I just sort of eye it. The more the sugar, the better, right?!Semisweet chocolate chips (a cup and a quarter)
Butterscotch chips (a cup and a quarter)
Shredded coconut (around a cup)
Chopped walnuts or pecans (around a cup)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Bake your Hello Dolly bars at 350 degrees for about 22 to 25 minutes. Let the bars cool 100% (I know it is super tempting to cut in, but it a huge disaster) then cut and enjoy! Mmmm, so delish! Hello Dolly bar prep takes no more than ten minutes so you can easily whip these up with little time to spare.

WASP Wednesday: Fall Must!
As I have mentioned time and time again WASPs tend to go back to their European roots with many aspects of their lives. Well, of course the Fall wardrobe is one of these aspects of life- it is hard to go wrong with European fashion!
WASPs love to be outdoors, but especially in the Fall when duck and pheasant season are in full swing! Any proper WASP must dress their part for these outings. So who does the WASP pull out of their WASPy wooded closet when the pheasants go flying? Well the Barbour of course! The waxed cotton is waterproofed for the dreary afternoons spent bonding with mother earth and the lining (usually plaid, but a fun floral in the above example) adds a bit of hidden flair to any WASP affair.
Barbour is ideal of for WASP days in the country, the classic Burberry trench is a city necessity. It can be worn on an average Fall day, but the cold weather insert can also be purchased for the extra chilly days the Northern WASP encounters. The classic trench never goes out of style like the Barbour so it can be passed down from WASP to WASP. No need to buy new when great aunt Bisty can will it to you!
Now, what does the WASP wear under all this outwear? A kilt of course! The great thing about kilts is that they come in just about every length for any aged WASP. Kilts also can be passed down (Hopsy wears her mother's from the 80's!) just like the trenches. Of course the WASPiest thing about kilts is that any good WASP can buy one in their family plaid! No more sporting around the basic blackwatch plaid around town, get the Flanaghan clan plaid and wear your colors with pride! Kilts looks fabulous with a monogrammed sweater or a traditional turtleneck. They also go perfectly with the Stubbs and Wootens as well as Hunters. Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Churchill is a sweet English bullie who was subjected to terrible wounds (his owner apparently set him on fire). All Eyes On Me

Here she comes!Preppy Blog Crowd: Being Mrs. Cullins
Her Southern Charm and I are back again to start the week off with the Preppy Blog Club Award! This week I am SO excited to introduce you to a blog that is relatively new to me. Lindsey has been so kind and commented on several of my recent posts so of course I headed over to Being Mrs. Cullins to check her out. Well, it was as if we were meant to be friends! We have SO much in common- we were both Kappas, we enjoy decorating and party planning, we love preppy things and we live in Dallas! Reading the answers to her questions was such fun because her answers are very similar to what mine would be. It always amazes me how you meet so many amazingly talented and wonderful men and women through blogging! I feel so very blessed to have gotten to know so many of you over the past year and a half and look forward to continuing our friendships for years and years to come.
I hope you all enjoy getting to know Lindsey as much as I did. Like all of you all, she is just wonderful as can be!

1. How did you come up with your blog name?
My blog actually started as a way for friends and family to stay
updated on our wedding planning progress, therefore I chose, "Our
Baylor Wedding" for the title. (We were married on Baylor campus at
the Armstrong Browning Library). Once we were married the blog name
had to change to reflect the new challenges and excitements of being a
newly wed. I went to New York with Kent's family about two weeks after
the wedding, and while sitting in Mary Poppins on Broadway listening
to "Being Mrs. Banks," I thought: Perfect! And "Being Mrs. Cullins"
was created.
2. What preppy item could you not live without aka the one thing you
would take with you to a deserted preppy island?
The wooden duck sitting on our coffee table, gifted down two
generations now. Maybe it could be my "Wilson" on my deserted island,
though obviously his name would be "Drake."
3. Who is your preppy icon?
I would have to say Grace Kelly. She was always so poised, with the
perfect proportion of modesty and style. She's someone that any
generation could turn to for inspiration, and she looked absolutely
fabulous in To Catch a Thief!
4. Where do you find your daily blog inspiration?
I write about things that I experience, see, or read about in my daily
life. When I learn something new, whether it's cooking, cleaning,
decorating, fashion, or spiritually related that I believe could be
valuable or helpful to someone else, I post about it. My mother made
being a mom and a wife look so easy, but there are tricks of the trade
she learned along the way. These posts are essentially the notes from
my journey. Some will be more personal in nature, while others will
seek a more general audience.
5. What is your favorite preppy photo of yourself?
6. If you could have one celeb's wardrobe including shoes and bags,
whose would you get?
Could I just have Betty Draper's stylist, please. I'm obsessed with
the clothes from Mad Men, so tasteful and preppy...If I had to pick a
real person, I would say Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith era and
beyond) She had a deal with St. John, which should be reason enough,
but those emerald earrings would be awesome for Baylor games!
7. What clubs, societies, or volunteer organizations are you involved
in? Were you in a sorority in college?
Kappa Kappa Gamma! I just moved to Dallas with my husband. We've only
been married a little over three months now, and I officially walked
the stage in August, so I'm just now getting acquainted with
everything. I registered with the Dallas alumni chapter yesterday, and
I hope to get involved with the Dallas junior league. While in
college, I was a Panhellenic chair for Kappa and a Supreme Court
Justice for the Baylor Student Government.
8. What were your plans for the weekend?
Friday night Kent and I stayed at home and watched Lawrence of Arabia.
I made us a loaf of Pecan Praline Apple Bread. If you don't have the
latest Southern Living check my blog; I'll post the recipe. Saturday
was a Baylor football day in Waco! Sic 'Em Bears!!!
9. Describe your perfect preppy outfit. Don't forget to include
accessories.
Preppy wardrobe Fall edition: nude leather quilted Burberry headband,
pearl studs and necklace, silk ivory ruffle blouse from Ralph Lauren,
brown wool plaid Brooks Brothers trousers possibly with a Carmel
colored cardigan and Salvatore Ferragamo suede signature flats. Or you
can substitute the cardigan for a sweater tied around your neck. Add
the LV bag the mister gave me for a wedding gift and the pearl Yurman
bangle from our first Christmas and I'm ready to go!
10. What designer do you think embodies classic American prep and why?
Definitely Brooks Brothers. It fills all the requirements: tweed,
argyle, herringbone, plaid, houndstooth, seersucker, blazers, shift
dresses, GTH pants, oxfords, polos, cuff links, scarfs, and etiquette
books. It also has a rich preppy history; I learned this summer that
Brooks Brothers invented the seersucker suit. It's a classic brand
that sticks to it's traditional roots. It never flirts with the trendy
like Ralph Lauren and JCrew sometimes do, but remains a staple for the
preppy and conservative at heart. Can you tell I'm a fan?

Taco in a Bag!
A few weeks ago I threw an impromptu Taco in a Bag/Ice Cream Sundae party. Now what is Taco in a Bag you might ask? Only the greatest invention ever! The only work required by the hostess is the cooking of the meat and the set up of the buffet. You buy bags of Fritos (next time I would steer clear of the snack size and go straight to the $.99 bags- the bigger, the better!) and then all the toppings you love to put on tacos. I do cheese, pico de gallo, corn, beans, guacamole, meat and of course sour cream. Guests then take a bag of Fritos and load on their toppings and shake the bag up and this is dinner. We always eat right from the bag so clean up is a cinch too. It is SO delicious and SO easy! Not only is it great for impromptu dinner parties, but it works for picnics and even tailgating. It is always a HIT so consider throwing your Taco in a Bag party tonight!Wednesday, September 16, 2009
Kappa Tablescapes Steel Magnolia
I have so enjoyed my job and have learned loads in just the past two months, but I must say it can certainly become quite time consuming. However, I have the BEST committee and quite the loot for the auction (a stay at the Ritz, a Tory Burch party for 20 friends-20% discount included- and restaurant gifts cards galore)! With that being said I am sure you are now just yearning to be part of our Southern Affair in October, aren't you!? Well, even if you do not live in Dallas I have a way for your to participate; yippee, I know!WASP Wednesday: WASP Games
Like any other family the WASP family loves games! Games are the perfect way for everyone of all ages to comes together, socialize and play. While WASPs are of course fans of the everyday card games they also love the classic board games. A true WASP favorite is Monopoly!
Monopoly is actually a game with a very rich and rather interesting history (it dates back to 1904 and during WWII a special version was made for POWs with hidden elements!) just like the life of the WASP it teaches one all about responsibility (make your choices wisely, when the money is gone it is gone and there are only so many houses and hotels) and managing money (hence why many WASP households have Monopoly Jr. on hand).
Monopoly can go on for days and days and get extremely competitive. Every WASP loves a good challenge and one that can go into the wee hours of the morning in the summer is even better.
Monopoly comes in many shapes and colors. There is the luxury edition of Monopoly, which is complete with a leather base and silver and gold houses, for the main residence. Some WASP households also have their local version or their Alma Mater board on hand for when the old school chums or neighbors pop in for an after dinner cocktail. WASPs can even purchase the British version of Monopoly for their travels and of course Lillyopoly is perfect for the summer house!
Monopoly is such a fun game for all ages! WASPs can even split in to teams; think family reunions...the Morgans vs. the Buckleys vs. the Fords. It provides endless (literally) hours of fun and even some education. So, grab the dice, pick out your playing piece (I call the horse and rider!) and let the games begin!!
