To all those lucky enough to be at the Lilly sale right now I am there in spirit by all the shift dresses!!
I am one that likes to prepare for anything in advance, but I am especially into getting things figured out before I travel. Of course packing is always a top priority, but so is getting to know my intended destination. I honestly am not one who has ever understood how someone can just get off a plane not having done any research on a city. I have always been taught that it is important to NOT stand out and you should always have an idea of where you are going. Thus, not only should your bring a map if you are unfamiliar with a city, but a fabulous travel guide is a must for me too!

I have carried an Access guide with me ever since I first studied abroad alone in 2004. (I mentioned these way back when I first started my blog, but figured we could all use a refresher!) Mother and I have looked through a number of guide books, but have found these to be the very best. Like many travel books, these too are divided into sections so it makes planning a visit to a particular area to a city much easier. The Access guides also use a color code so you can easily flip through and only read about hotels or restaurants or stores. These guides are incredibly thorough and also include maps at the start of every section as well is small ones placed in between some of the larger sections. So, even if you forgot to buy your Streetwise map (tish, tish!) you will be able to navigate the city without too much trouble.
While I LOVE to visit museums and historic sites and monuments you can only spend so many hours each day taking everything in. I just love that the Access guides give you the 411 on all the fabulous stores too! I have discovered many of my favorites haunts with the help of Access and you can too! From small paper boutiques on the smallest of Rues in Paris to divine leather shops off the beaten path in London Access has something for everyone! Then, after you have gotten you shopping fix simply open up the book, find your section and pick a cafe! With the help of Access you can almost live as if you were a native! So when preparing for your next trip, whether is be in the US or abroad, be sure to prepare well in advance. Make a list of all your "musts" and then flip through your Access book to spice things up!
Later this week: the shopping guide of shopping guides!

Ooh! Thanks. I'll have to get these when we (eventually) take out rip to Italy. I want to take the Orient Express from Paris. Ahh...
I'm so glad you are back! Happy & Safe travels Hopsy!! :)
Great tip! Hopefully I'll be traveling abroad sometime in the near future so I can check these out!
You are so right! Researching about everything you might be able to take advantage of at your destination is so important. You truly want to come away visiting sites that would be most meaningful to you. That's what travel is about; a personal experience. Do enjoy!
Thank you for posting this! It's like you read my mind. I was looking for some good travel guides for my upcoming trips to Europe.
LOVE your blog!! Thanks for coming back!! I posted an award for you on my blog! Have a wonderful day!
I just love to plan out trips! I agree that it's best to plan in advance to make sure you hit all the hot spots and can manage your way around. Ooh this is making me want to go on a trip!
Thanks for the Access tip! My husband and I are planning a trip to Paris and some other cities next spring - these will definitely be helpful!
I got to go to the Lilly Sale early with a friend! It was amazing :)
Thank you - we leave for Europe in about 3 weeks and mid-trip we'll be in Paris where I haven't been for about 10 years! We have a couple of other guidebooks but I will definitely check the bookstore for Access.
my friend is about to head to paris, im going to look into this!
Great info. The bookstores have sooooo many, so this helps make a choice for sure.
Awesome, thanks!
What a great tip - thank you!
Thank you so much for the travel tips! I will have to check out the Access Guides for my next vacay!!
I'm so glad you are back! I really missed reading your blog!
London and Paris are two of my absolute fav cities! Did you also know that J Crew has a "Shopping Guide" with space for trip memoirs? The London, Paris, and Milan edition is on my coffee table!
Great minds think alike !! I LOVE ACCESS. When I traveled for work (constantly) I had one for every city. Best books out there.
Yes! The three European essentials: the Access guide, the Michelin guide (covered in a discrete wrapping, although many locals use them for dining), and one of those newer Moleskin city-map journals that allows for lots of good notes. Love your entire book list. I read Summer at Tiffany's last year while lounging poolside at SI and thought it was incredibly sweet.
Love Love Access guides. A friend of Mother's from childhood used to write them!!
So glad you are back! I am big into planning too, I find it takes a lot of stress out of traveling. I gave my parents the City Walks 50Adventures on Foot series which I highly recommend too.
While you make some excellent points, if only once in your life and only for one day, you simply must experience the spontaneous wonder of getting to a station, picking a destination out of thin air, getting on the train and then getting off simply to wonder around to see what you can see without a guide or book or map! It can be wonderful or awful or both, but it's a wild and truly freeing experience that everyone should have at least once!
Great post! :-)
you were missed at the sale! :) Katie B. from The Salty Kiss and I are getting a private tour like you did in November!
