Sugar Cookie ???

UPDATE: I was afraid the Pillsbury dough would not be the way to go. After all your wonderful advice I have decided I might as well find the time to make the sugar cookie dough. It will be well worth my while and the end result will be just what I am hoping for!
I have a VERY packed weekend, but must bake and perfectly frost sugar cookies at some point. I LOVE my family's sugar cookie recipe, but unfortunately just do not have the time to make it this weekend. My question for you all is: does the Pillsbury sugar cookie dough work with cookie cutters? I want to make sure the cookies will not get too puffy and that they keep their shape. It is not cute when a cookie is puffy and then frosting only makes it look worse. You get the picture... So, is it safe to go with the Pillsbury dough and/or does anyone have any other suggestions? I do plan to make my frosting (royal icing in fact!) so I am all set in that area. I figure mix a little home made with some pre-made, add some love and they will hopefully look almost perfect!

I used the pilsbury dough for some chrismas cookies, and we had problems with the cookies keeping their shape in the oven

I agree... I have used it as a quicky cookie for tailgates and such and they do not do well with keeping their shape. You couldn't tell what the "football jersey" cookie were at all, much less the football shaped ones.

I've never had good luck with cutting out Pillsbury sugar cookie dough...they spread A LOT and become all distorted...not a pretty cookie at all.

I haven't used the Pilsbury dough before. However, I would reconmend that one weekend when you are not particularly busy, making a batch or two of your sugar cookie dough and freezing it. It will keep for three months in your freezer. That way, whenever you want cookies but don't have the time for the dough you can just pull one out of the freezer, let it thaw, and it's ready to go!

Nope, pilsbury dough does not hold it's shape. it gets puffy and usually can't tell what the shape was to begin with!

Sorry, but I have concur with the other comments. The dough will not keep its shape - especially for your more detailed cookies. Works fine if you are just making snowmen ;-) xoxo

I've never tried the Pilsbury dough for my cutout cookies.

Something I've tried and it worked really well... I knew I had an event coming up and I would need to make cutout sugar cookies. I made them ahead of time, minus the icing. I put them in an air tight container in the freezer. A day before the event pulled them out and iced them. I was nervous they would taste bad but they were great! I know that doesn't help you this time but maybe in the future.

Can't wait to see your decorated cookie. It's such an art.

I had this problem when making Sun Bowl Princess Cookies... I ended up taking them out about 5 min before the were finished and re-cut them with a cookie cutter... this worked great for me. They were crowns with royal icing and the girls initial piped on

I'm not sure about shapes, but if you're really super pressed for time order the cookies plain (online or at the store) and you can decorate without having to bake. I've heard good things about Tiff's Treats and Pokey O's.

I have to agree that the Pillsbury cookies will probably end up looking like the dough boy himself. They just get too distorted. Thanks for the sweet comment - I'd be happy to do a custom whenever you're ready!

I make decorated cookies as a side business but I have only used home made dough (see pics of various cookies on my site, Valentine and sea themed)but you might try adding more flour and kneading it in before rolling out. Make a test cookie and adjust from there. Might be faster just to nuke the butter in the microwave for a 10 seconds to soften and make your tried and true recipe if even in stages.

Have a great time in NY!

I love the sugar cookies and I am always looking for the perfect recipe. I do not think the pilsbury ones keep there shape enough to make them the perfect choice.

Hopsy!

You can use Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie dough mix!

http://www.bettycrocker.com/products/cookies/Cookies-Landing-Page.htm

I have used it with great success. I believe you have to add a bit more flour per the directions on the bag to make cutout cookies. Just be sure that once you have made your cut outs you really chill them before baking. Works like a charm!

Have fun at the MARTHA SHOW. I have been several times. It is greta fun! I just wish I could be there with fellow Lilly Lovers!

the best sugar cookie dough is actually a cream cheese cookie dough. The cookies are great and easy to cut out. Look for the recipe on my blog or allrecipes.com. have fun!

I am blogging from right outside the lilly store in hinsdale Illinois! The selection is so darling I am going to plan a lilly party! I had such a craving for juice after seeing all the cute things. You should suggest to lilly that they have juice bars in store!

I'd stay away from the Pillsbury, too. I have tried the Betty Crocker mix and on the back of the package, it tells you to add about 1/4 cup flour (I think) if you are making cut-out cookies. These might do in a pinch. But, would you ever consider sharing your homemade sugar cookie recipe? Our old family recipe gets too hard so I'm always looking for a "keeper".

If you use pre-made sugar cookie mix add vanilla extract. It helps to take away from the "this wasn't homemade" taste. Good luck on the cookies!

in the end you'll be glad you chose to go with your family recipe...even though i am sure pillsbury is good, you can't go wrong with a tried and true family fave.

have a great weekend!

You are smart to make your own dough. The Pillsbury dough does not work well.

Ditto Pink Martini...The Pilsbury dough just needs a little flour added to it. I think it even may say that on the package.

I think it's a good idea to go with the homemade dough. Will you post pictures of the finished product?

I haven't made cookies in YEARS! I love those ones though, the shoe is especially cute!

Good luck! I hope they turn out perfectly. I'm with MalloryAnn if you use Pillsbury, take them out a few min BEFORE & recut the dough. Then you are fine. I do it all the time with my kids cookies. I have nooooo time to make my own dough.
Good luck!!

I always use my homemade sugar cookie dough. The store bought dough never works well for me when cutting and baking shaped cookies. Have fun baking! Love & blessings from NC!

The Pillsbury website says to add a half cup of flour if you need to have shapes. I am going to try it with Easter cookies, I will let you all know.

I also use pilbury dough. The secret into them keeping their shape is - AFTER YOU CUT OUT COOKIES AND PLACE THEM ON A NON GREASED COOKIE SHEET PLACE THEM INTO THE REFRIDGERATOR FOR 20 MIN. BEFORE PUTTING THEM INTO A PREHEATED OVEN OF 325 DEGREES. COOK FOR ONLY 8 MINUTES TAKE OUT AND LET THEM COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE TRYING TO REMOVE THEM. THIS WILL WORK EVERYTIME. GOOD LUCK.
