JLD!

Today I am turning in my form to join the Junior League of Dallas. My mother was always an active leaguer wherever we lived when I was little and when I moved to Dallas two years ago I knew I wanted to be involved. I wanted to wait to establish a life here before committing and there is not better year than the present for me! I have had my three sponsors sign my form and I will soon join the ranks. A special thanks to Weasel's Journey and Preppy Pettit for reaching out and offering to help my in this process! I am also excited to report that Mojito Maven and I will be in the same provisional class (if you read her blog, which I am sure you all so, you likely knew this already!) which is beyond fabulous! This is the start of something fabulous and I cannot wait until things begin in March!
To keep you in the know I will leave you with a few facts about JLD:

Founded in 1922, the Junior League of Dallas, Inc. trains members for effective participation in the community and is dedicated to the belief that volunteer service is an essential part of responsible citizenship.

· The Junior League of Dallas is a diverse group of women between the ages of 22 and 50 who believe that voluntarism does make a difference.

· Seventy eight percent of the active membership is employed outside the home.

· In 2007-2008, Active members gave over 120,000 uncompensated hours of service to 40 Junior League of Dallas community projects and several service support committees. Additionally, Provisionals donated over 8,000 service hours through Provisional Projects to meet community needs.

· Monetary grants distributed to organizations within the community during 2007-2008 will be approximately $1 million. Approximately 1,600 volunteers are working with 40 projects.

· Junior League members currently serve on 50 community boards and coalitions.

· The JLD raises money to support non-profit agencies in Dallas County including the 43 agencies in our Community Program, our 10 Provisional Projects, our Community Outreach Impact Projects, and the Community Assistance Fund. The JLD raises funds to support the training of volunteers, which takes place both at the JLD and in community volunteer opportunities. These funds will be gathered through donations from JLD members, other individuals, corporations and foundations; grants; advertising sales; underwriting and ticket sales for the 2008 Ball and Auction; commemorative giving; and the annual fund.

Congrats, I am going Sustaining this May after 9 yrs in the ATL league and finishing-up here in the Midwest, I have made wonderful friends through League and have enjoyed the most outstanding moments in both communities, it was a proceless experience. A dear friend is of mind is a Dallas Sustainer, she gave tirelessly, Melanie Weaver if you ever get the chance to meet. Also, were you a Kappa at SMU? My best friend was a Kappa there as well, she graduated in 1995 though. Anyhoo, best wishes!

I'm joining JLD also!!! I went to an informational meeting in the fall and have had all three sponsors sign off on me as well. I haven't heard anything this month though. Is there a meeting this month or does everything start in March? I moved after going to the informational meeting so I am hoping something did not get lost in the mail.

My daughter,(Adventures of a Southern Newlywed) wants to join the League in her city too when she gets settled down with her new job. She found some of her sponsors through her blog. Junior League women are like Sorority Sisters, they form a bond with each other. I know you will LOVE it!!! Some of my favorite cookbooks are Junior League cookbooks. The Junior League in Raleigh, NC just sponsored the Governor's ball for her inauguration in January. It is their fundraiser. Love & blessings!

You are going to be such a wonderful asset to the Junior League, and I am honored to be a part of bringing you on board. I expect that before long people will be whispering, "Who do we have to thank for bringing us THIS outstanding girl?!" and I, of course, will be on record as your lead sponsor. :)

I am so glad your post explained Junior League - had wondered what it was all about - I had it in my head that it was something to do with baseball?!! Wish there was something similar over here - Americans are so good with volunteering and civic responsibility - it's an amazing thing about your way of life over there!

I am joining my Junior League's provisional class this coming August. I had planned to start in January, but with my illness and accident in Nov. & Dec, I did not get my paperwork submitted in time.

Have you read "The Devil in the Junior League" by Linda Francis Lee? I just finished reading it and it is hilarious. It is set in Texas and even mentions the Dallas JL. I would love to hear your take on the novel.
