Gifts!

I got several questions about the gift section of my binder today and thought I would share more on this organizational tool. Spreading the love is what blogging is all about, right?!
A gift binder makes shopping so much easier! There are two parts to my gift binder: the log and the ideas.
I keep a log of all gifts given. The log notes to whom something was given and for what occasion. I created a simple spreadsheet in Excel so it is nothing fancy at all. However, you would be surprise how much easier things have become with this spreadsheet! If I am questioning purchasing a certain gift for someone and fear it might be too similar to something given in the past I simply open up Excel and voila, problem solved! Also, if something has been given that was a big hit it is nice to take note in case it could be given to someone else in the future.
Now, onto the fun part: finding the gifts! I get LOADS of magazines and catalogs. In the past I have had a hard time parting with issues as I feared I may forget about something or how to place an order, etc. I know this sounds odd, but it is hard to keep track of these small details. So, over Christmas it dawned on me to start collecting pullouts of items that would make fabulous gifts and a new binder was soon born. Just like a clothing or home binder, a gift binder holds all my ideas and favorite treasures found on the pages of magazines. Once I pull a page out I make sure to note what exactly caught my eye with a arrow sticky note. This way as the binder grows I will not have to worry about forgetting any small detail. I try and pull only items I can actually see myself gifting otherwise, the binder can become a huge hodge podge and end up being a bit useless. I also think it is important to pull gifts at very price points and for different ages. This way I will (hopefully) never get myself into a bind! I have also thought about adding photos of beautifully wrapped gifts for inspiration. It is fun to try new ways of to tie bows or different adornments. If you have trouble mixing it up this might be something to add to your binder too. Another wonderful wrapping source with pages of ideas is Carolyne Rhoem's Presentations: A Passion for Gift Wrapping. If you have not taken a look you simply must!!
So ladies it is simple as that! Now, all you have to do is pick up a cute binder, some fun wrapping paper that represents you, a box of sheet protectors, a stack of magazines and you are good to go!!

I do something quite similar for decorating and receipes. I love magazines, but the clutter can become overwhelming!

Great idea! I think I'm going to start doing this as well! So many times things in magazines catch my eye and then they're forgotten as soon as I finish reading. This way I'll never forget!

Love your ideas about gifting using the magazines. I have started a binder with email sites that have awesome products to sell. (Like the jewelry site you featured.) I love ordering things online and if I have the sites listed in my binder, I can see what I want to order in the future.I know I could list them on the computer, but I am a visual person and I like to see them listed in a binder. I write lots of notes and send lots of cards, so I keep a journal of the cards I send each month, to whom and what the occasion was. That way, I can make sure I don't forget anyone. I am a big list person. Take care. Love & blessings!

I'm afraid that I would just pull everything I saw that I liked! What a great idea! I thought I was being organized keeping a gift log of wedding gift's I am getting! This puts me to shame! :)

I'm going to have to start one of these! Could you share with us what your favorite magazines and catalogs are? I get quite a few, too, but I always like to have plenty of resources!

I have binders for the many tear sheets that I collect!
I love that I can find things and have goals to work toward giving gifts, especially home-made gifts.

My friend, Nancy, is so organized. When she decorates her home, she paints a white piece of cardstock the color of her new room. Then, she staples to that cardstock all fabrics and trims that she used in the room. She also carries carpet/rug samples, granite samples, etc. In fact, you have inspired me to post this idea on my blog!

I love my binders of inspiration! There are things from magazines 10 year ago that I will NEVER get rid of! It's such a fun thing to have.

I have done a version of this for decorating inspiration that I want to keep. I have an entertaining binder as well (don't want to serve the same thing twice to the same group). I have kept a folder with clothing etc... that I would like to have which has come in very handy for my husband when he doesn't know what to get me for a gift!

I am laughing at how similarly the organizing part of our brains works! I've had to narrow my binders down now--not just the catalogs and magazines were taking over!

I used to keep wedding invitations. I'd jot down on the back the silver/china pattern and what piece I'd given. That way, I'd have the anniversary date, the new name, and know what I'd given too. Plus, who doesn't like to look at a great piece of stationery with incredible engraving?

Now, if I could only be that organized again. You'd be amazed at what having a family does to your inner "Martha"!

I do the same thing for decorating ideas, crafting ideas. I had to because I just couldn't keep all my magazines. I may start the gift binder. {I have a record of all Christmas gifts, etc. but not other gifts} Great Idea Hopsy - thanks for sharing !!!

Love this idea, what a great way to keep track of things! And I agree, I was not a fan of Miss Indiana's dresses. I wish i had watched the show leading up to it, that would have been fun to see what their personalities were like. Have a great day!

That is a FANTASTIC idea...will you do mine? Ha. I'm not sure I am organized enough to pull this off...

Love it! I have a bunch of binders too but for some reason, I had never thought of keeping a gift spreadsheet. That's saying something since I have a serious love of spreadsheets! Thanks for the great idea!
