I have gotten a number of reader comments and emails regarding my hair. Before I go on I want to say thank you each of you who has complimented me. I have somewhat difficult hair so it means so much to me!
I have tired just about everything out there when it comes to hair. My hair is naturally thick and curly. I am lucky in that I do not have to wash it daily, but when I do wash my hair I do not use any super, super special shampoo. I do switch shampoos after every bottle as I was once told this is apparently good for your hair. This summer I used Bliss shampoo and conditioner and now I am using Garnier color shield. I also do a John Frieda gloss treatment every two weeks and have Frederic Fekkai shea butter conditioner on hand for the hair around my forehead.
It used to take me ages to do my hair as I would let it dry naturally (this took hours and hours) and then I would straighten it with my Solano Sapphire. If you need a flat iron I swear by my SS. I have had it since high school and it is the ONLY straightener I have come across that gets the job done. No drug store flat iron has ever worked and the Chi did absolutely nothing at all. In fact many friends thought I was crazy, but as soon as they borrowed my Sapphire they had to have one too. Anyway, it took me almost an hour, but one day I decided flat and straight was boring on me and I wanted to have salon hair everyday. So I reverted back to blow drying.
I use a basic blow dryer from Target (nothing special... not like my Sapphire) and a two inch round brush. I do not blow dry all my hair at once, but do it in small sections like salons. I start from the back and work my way around and up. I use the highest heat on the blow dryer, hold it very close (close as in no breathing room close) and really pull. Obviously the large brush gives me great body and also that finishing touch of curl at the ends. It takes me about forty minutes to blow dry my hair. Unless I have some major disaster area I do not use my Sapphire. I occasionally pull it out to fix an unwanted kink or get rid of humidity frizz, but the blow dryer is my new best friend. It can be yours to along with a great large barrel brush! I purchased my brush at Ulta and have not looked back since. As with anything the time you put in can make all the difference. Though there are days I dread standing in front of the mirror armed with my dryer, but the end result is always worth it. If you have thinner hair and your look will not last as long as someone with a thick head I would suggest getting some big curlers (I used to have a one and half inch set of six by Conair) to perk things up. I hope this helps everyone! For the record I am not a hair expert so this is my routine and these are merely suggestions.

You have such beautiful hair, so this helps the rest of us! Unfortunately, I have fine & thin hair, so it doesn't have the nice body yours does!! But I do use a round brush & a nicer blow dryer from Target & that does help!
Thanks for this post! While I do not have thick hair, they are great suggestions! I just went shorter and blow drying with a large barrel brush in sections is so much better than what I was doing before (just blow drying the whole thing...). One more piece of advice (for others!) when you go to the salon, ask to look at the mirror when they are drying your hair. This is how I (recently) got the courage to start doing this myself. Thanks for the great post MM! :-) Maybe I'll do one about my short hair!
I wish I had the coordination to blow dry my hair with a round brush. For some reason I never can get that right.
I hope you have a nice week!
Love your hair, Helen!
I too use a blowdryer and barrel brush-it gives my very straight shoulder-length hair body with a bend at the shoulders. I use the 370 or 390 barrel brush by Technique-it is ionic and static free. Love it!!!:)
thanks for the tips! I havethe weirdest hair EVER! It is thick but not curly, just FRIZZY. AND it needs to be washed every five minutes. I would give anything to be able to was it only a couple times a week.
Wow! I wish my hair had the beautiful body that your hair has! I have baby fine hair so I pretty much just let it dry naturally and flat iron it. I hope one day my hair will get over being the exact same texture as a babies!
This post made me smile. I also have thick curly hair and can remember dreading summer, with all the boating and water sports. Nothing like a crazy post-water skiing windblown semi-afro to scare off a budding middle school romance ;) My husband went to medical school in Louisiana, so I suffered through several years of 98% humidity. ugh. So happy to be back in the great-for-curly-hair-dry heat of Texas!
My daughter Katherine has the curlies, too. She's only in first grade, but Katesy can can already weild a round brush like a pro. ha ha!
I have really curly and thick hair, too (although mine is a lot shorter now) and I like to use some of the different sized Conair curling irons--about $15 at Target because they don't give you that flat look but they work well for a quick smooth down if things get too frizzy. They have the heat control and I always have it turned up to 25 and it really works for me.
The products for straightening and smoothing are so much better than when I was young that you can get control over curly hair. My past is filled with bad hair days!
I do wish I could wash my hair a couple of times a week. You could fry chicken in my hair after like 8 hours :)
wow - 40 minutes! i too have thick, curly, long hair that is a real pain to dry/straighten. it used to take me that long to dry my hair, however, i have found a few additional tricks that can help cut down on dry time, but will take a while for you to fine tune to your own needs . . . one is that i always let my hair air dry either down, or in a loose bun until it is about 50-80% dry before i even start to blow dry. i find this not only cuts down on dry time, but keeps my hair healthier! also, something that i absolutely cannot live without ... is my T3 ionic hairdryer, while on the expensive side, i have had it for 3 years, and could not live without it - it cuts my drying time in half and my hair feels like silk when i am done, it is so amazing! here is the link to it. http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P173100&categoryId=C11244 also, another amazing product is this curling/flat iron which does both, depending on how fast you pull it through your hair, it will either curl or straighten!!! thus you are able to get rid of friz, while curling the ends at the same time!!! here is the link to that product http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P173102&categoryId=C11244 in case you cant tell, i am totally obsessed with T3 products - expensive but totally worth it, because it cuts down on your drying time, helps keep your hair healthier, and makes it silky smooth! also, free shipping over $50 from sephora! www.sephora.com
I'm so glad you posted about this, as I am on the lookout for a new flat iron and have been overwhelmed by all the different brands out there. Thanks!
Great tips!
Your post inspired me to use a round brush this morning as opposed to my usual hap hazard blow drying that I then correct with my chi. My hair definitely looks better than usual--thanks for inspiring a good hair day :)
Great thoughts. I too, am a fan of the barrell brush. It works wonders. I just added a wide barrel curling iron to just add a little finished bend to my ends. It makes such a difference. I too, have very thick hair so I completely sympathize. here's to our toned arms from hours of blow drying! xo
Just stumbled across your blog...I too am a Kappa and love all things preppy :) And it sounds like we have exactly the same hair! Same straightening routine with the round brush too. Happy blogging!
One thing that really helps me is to get a blowout twice a week at a salon - I have thick hair, too (mine is longer, about half-way down my back) and it's worth the small amount of money to have it professionally done (relaxing, too!)
